The Selma marches were the marches in 1965, the American civil rights movement. They marched because they blacks had to take a test and pass to be able to vote. The tests they had to take were completely unfair and impossible to pass. They grew out of the voting rights movement in Selma, Alabama. The marches were led by Martin Luther King Jr. himself. The first march took place on March 7th. 600 civil rights marchers were attacked by the state and local police with billy clubs and tear gas. Poor innocent citizens were beat because they were standing up for what was right. The second march was on March 9th, also not a success. Finally during the third march on March 21st were they able to go the full 51 miles to Montgomery.
